If you’ve been following my blog, my twitter stream, or *gasp* talking with me in the physical world you probably realize that I’m involved in gobs of different projects and ideas right now.
All are, of course, very exciting to me and I want to get each up and running so I can share them with the world…and staying active in so many various things also helps to keep me pushing myself and learning more and more each day…but at the same time, it forces me into a lack of focus and makes it hard to actually *complete* anything. (when I say complete, I really mean get to version one because honestly, I don’t know that software is EVER “complete”).
So, in an effort to actually start releasing things…I’m going to attempt to focus.
But I’m not going to give up on any projects (right now) - no, instead my plan is just to prioritize each product (mostly based on how close each is to it’s next version and what external deadlines each has).
With all that in mind, here’s my short list of what I’m hoping to focus on in the short term:
1. Version 2 of fubnub.com - this version is a rewrite of the web site from PHP to 100% Perl (using the catalyst framework). In the process I have cleaned up some of the known bugs, documented the code a bit more, swapped out the MS SQL database to a PostgreSQL database, and added an API (which was the main reason for the rewrite in the first place).
I think I’m about 80% of the way to this next version, and I already have a few people waiting on the API so I want to power through it all as quickly as possible (and that’s what makes it #1 to me right now).
2. Toptenify - this is a dead-simple idea/project that I told Jason about two months ago I could do in about a day (and I still think that’s a valid estimate)…the only problem is that since talking with him about it, I really haven’t taken the time to just sit down and *DO* it.
Mostly because I’ve been dragging my feet on it, and it really is such a simple project…it makes the list at #2 right now.
3. All things momentum. Donnie has wrapped up his beta version work (just emailed me about the details today in fact) and he’s got some great business contacts that we are anxious to talk to (with a working demo of stuff)…so it’s about time for me to take the stick and start running on a few of the sample apps/ideas.
If all things go to plan, and I really do focus on these things in the order I intend to (outside of the actual 9-5 job thing, and the 5-? consulting thing I mean)…I think I should be working on/focusing on #3 by next week…and I would feel really (REALLY) good about that.
So that’s my short term goal - for now. Let’s see how I do.
